CHARACTER BASICS
1. Name: Narcissa Black Malfoy
2. Age: 39
3. Proposed PB: Naomi Watts
4. Former House/blood status: Slytherin, Pure-blood
5. Political views:

The last year of the war was disillusioning for Narcissa. Her life and her house was dominated by Voldemort; her house was turned into a base of operation, and occupied by multitudes of Death Eaters. Voldemort would come and go. Always presenting a quiet, obedient front as the pure-blood lady and wife, she was seething with indignation and fear for her family and her life. When Voldemort was overthrown, there was a period of time where intense scrutiny was focused on the Malfoy's involvement. Heavy fines were inflicted, hearings were held, and by some slim grace, Narcissa was found innocent of culpability. Draco, was also not held accountable. Lucius, although heavily involved with the Death Eaters prior to his incarceration in Azkaban, was found to be an involuntary participant of Death Eater activities from 1997 to 1998. Because of this, and his prior term served in Azkaban, Lucius was put on house arrest for an extended term. Narcissa was pushed to the fore front of the public eye, to be the spokesperson for the Malfoy family. Externally, Narcissa came out in open support of Quango. The Malfoys, still exceedingly wealthy, have donated large sums of coin to help fund their efforts to change the Wizard world. Behind closed doors, nothing has changed with the Malfoys; pure-blood supremacy is best.

Narcissa is interested in politics only in as how it impacts her family. The political arena is key to societal standings, and she wants to see her family’s worth rise. Because of this, and in order to function properly, she has been forced to keep abreast of the constant inadequacies that seem to plague its organizational structure.

6. Occupation: Socialite, Philanthropist, independently wealthy
7. Sexuality:

Narcissa is a heterosexual woman, who is not interested in other woman as anything other than social competition. She was always fascinated by Lucius Malfoy, and he became her only choice for marriage; with him, she could move into the greater society, which pleased her immensely. Her fascination with him was wildly romantic when she was young, and he fulfilled all of her wishes by indulging her with romantic tokens of affection, notes and the like. This helped to cement their relationship, and base it on mutual affection. She loved him the day they were married, and she loves him still. He tests her patience at times, but she is completely loyal to him as he is loyal to her. Although other dalliances may occur for her with other men, and he with other women, they are both strong defenders of each other and tend to ignore these seldom affairs.

8. Character personality. Please include strengths and weaknesses.

Narcissa’s strengths include her intelligence, reliability, loyalty, and her ability to be analytical. Her weaknesses include her perfectionist disposition. She is spoiled, nosey, arrogant, and overcritical.
Narcissa is not one to shirk work. Being a perfectionist can take many hours of planning and implementing her careful plans. Running a leading pure-blood family is a complicated job of society games that involves hosting, participating and sponsoring a number of events through out the year. Even with the assistance of house-elves, these events take work; her practice makes it look effortless. Her only vice at the moment is an occasional indulgence in drink and smoke. She could never be called lazy; she always has many obligations to her charitable institutions and the pure-blood society organizations to fulfill. Her family and their needs take priority over all of it.

Narcissa is an introvert who knows how to mask herself as an extrovert in social situations. She is a great observer but internalizes her emotions. She will make mental lists, and silently debate the pros and cons of situations; while externally, she barely shows emotion. She is actually quite fond of specific people in her family, although it is not publicly or rarely expressed. She is confident in her decisions; she spends much time deliberating them and only acts when she feels sure of the outcome. Her silence and ability to control her tongue has labeled her vain and cold, which she has come to accept, being aware that there are those who do not endeavor to know her true nature. She understands the rules of higher society and wouldn’t dream of making rash statements that might leave her open for public criticism. She cares very much for those who are important to her, and for activities that may directly impact her or her family’s lives. She is introverted in that she has few close acquaintance, and very few 'friends'.

Narcissa was sorted into the Slytherin house because as all Slytherins, she is proud and ambitious. She has some skill at debate, although she is not the best; she has good insight due to her observation skills. She is excellent at what she is: the consummate hostess. At any social event, she knows how to draw out people, inter mingle those who need to associate with each other and alleviate any potential crisis that may arise. She enjoys the political world because of its interplay with the societal standings and values. She enjoys the chance to manipulate and influence others. When faced with a situation that she does not see as a direct influence upon her own life, she will politely withdrawal from the conversation so as not to draw undo attention to herself. She is very familiar with most of Death eaters, having known them as students or entertained them socially at the Manor.

Narcissa does not form many close relationships; the majority of her acquaintances are not to be trusted enough to be drawn into her inner circle.

It is her relationship to Lucius Malfoy that is had been central to her life; never a day passed where she was not pleased that they had chosen each other to hold their place in society. Through him, she gained ever desire she wanted; to rule the pure-blood society and become one of the most influential families in the wizarding world. This was lost due to circumstances that neither Lucius nor Narcissa could predict. Her devotion to him was without question; this devotion has been tested and still found resilient. It is their daily interaction that is a basis for her routine. She loves him, even after all of these years.

Her love for her son is also a dominating force in her life. Being a young mother during the first war, Narcissa raised Draco with great affection and devotion. She indulged him, and delighted in how tiny a person could have such confidence and self-expression. She is selfless when it comes to her husband or her son; she would go to desperate lengths to protect either of them. She would do anything for her family; her strong feelings are so rarely viewed by others.

Her main goal at the present is to bring the Malfoy name back to political power and influence. She finds as she is put more in the public eye, she is using skills that have laid dormant from her younger years. She is being forced to become more of an extrovert. She must be seen more in public, to help alter and change the basic perception of her family. Always supportive of St. Mungos, Narcissa Malfoy has become a more prominent figure there, expressing concern for the care of the sick and funding improvements as they are suggested.

Appearance
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 110 pounds
Build: Narcissa has porcelain skin, a slight turn to her nose and long straight blond hair. She is a smaller woman, and stands 5’5”, has a “c” bra size, and has a curvy figure. She is not muscular but is deceptively strong. She is very physically fit, and has the body she had when she was in school, due to strict diet and exercise and “other” assistance when needed.
Eyes: Cold Blue,
Hair: Light blond
Dress style:
Narcissa is a pure-blood witch who has a posh sense of style. She has a wide variety of ensembles that flatter her figure, and accent her elegance and class. She enjoys wearing jewelry, and prefers her hair down, although a nice up style is also acceptable. Her clothes are magic tailored, her nails are always perfectly kept, and she secretly wears her toe nails painted to match her outfits. She adores the accoutrements of being female. She always looks natural while perfectly made up; she was excellent at potions and has created a number of her own beauty products that she uses to maintain the glow of her skin. She turns heads still, and looks at least 10 years younger than her actual age.

9. Character history. Include their activity during the war.
Narcissa is the last of the three Black girls, to be born to pure-blood parents. She is the only of the three sisters to be born fair skinned, with blond hair and blue eyes, which made her the oddity in the Black family of all dark-haired dark-eyed relatives. Being the youngest and the most unusual in appearance, she was the darling of the family. She was doted on and spoiled by her family, but was also controlled and directed by all of her older siblings and relatives. She was not unduly coddled as a young adult, and clear minded enough to make decisions about her own future. As the youngest, she had a driving ambition to compete with her two older sisters for the approval of her parents, who laid great plans and expectations on the marriages they would make. Her family was thrilled at the marriage arrangements made with the Malfoy family, and were very supportive. They did not live long enough to see the birth of their grandchild, Draco, which made her feel like she had failed them in a small way, although she would never, ever reveal this disappointment.

As a pure-blood wife, she thinks she was absolutely successful. She knows it was skill and planning that led to her snaring the best pure-blood male catch available in the wizarding community; she outdid her sisters’ in that respect. She thinks her relationship with Lucius is perfect. She defers to Lucius' decisions as he is the man; but she expects respect from him in return. She is the ultimate trophy wife, but she is much more than that; she is not a meek, powerless woman. She supports her husband's plans and she is a key component to helping create pathways to influence others in social and political spheres. When they do disagree, these arguments are plagued with short bouts of anger and then silence on her part. With the changes caused by the war, Narcissa has been prompted to make her own decisions more for the family, much to Lucius's displeasure. This independence is refreshing and she has discovered that she is enjoying her role as the family leader. She has been unfaithful only rarely in her younger years, but she could never explain why these dalliances occurred; they were not planned and so uncharacteristic of her nature that she dismisses them as moments of temporary insanity on her part.

Narcissa was a popular girl at Hogwarts, but not by outwardly pursuing friendships. She was reserved and cold, which gave her a reputation as being vain; this caused other girls to seek her attention and affection. She was pursued by boys, who she flatly refused. She was a year younger than Severus Snape, and treated him as a casual friend; he offered and gave support to her to improve her already excellent skills in her Potion’s class. She caught Lucius Malfoy’s eye while she was still in school, and married him the summer after her 7th year, to begin their life together in the Malfoy Manor.

Narcissa's role in the first war was active; although not a Death Eater herself, she was an avid supporter of her family’s choices. Her friendship with Severus Snape became stronger as his apparent favor in the Dark Lord’s eye was made clear. She would be anything she could to support her husband and her sister’s activities for the Dark Lord. During this time, Draco was born. Lucius was gone much of the time, allowing her to lavish attention on her boy. Near the end of the first war, Lucius’s life was in danger of exposure and imprisonment; she feared for him desperately and used her political ties and skills to help him avoid punishment. Her efforts ensured his uninterrupted position in society. The period that followed was blissful; she had the perfect family and devoted herself to her husband and her child. Lucius continued to serve on the school board, and society events were arranged and held. Her life was comfortable, and her family was prospering. The only dark cloud was her limited relationship with her sisters; Bella was imprisoned in Azkaban, and Andromeda was insane with her Muggle influences.

The second war changed everything; the choices that her family had made put them at great peril. With Lucius captured and the Malfoy name discredited, many of Narcissa's worst fears were realizing themselves. She found herself seeking out Severus Snape, relying on their previous relationship, to seek help for her son. His position of importance with the Dark Lord had made him a more attractive associate and she convinced him to promise to help protect her son with the Unbreakable curse, shared also by her sister Bellatrix. Her efforts were successful, and Draco was saved by Severus Snape. She was grateful, but then became fearful, as Voldemort turned his disgust for his disappointment onto her son and her husband.

The last year of the war was the worst to test her patience and her emotional turmoil for her family. Lucius was released from Azkaban, and Voldemort deemed their home the best to serve as a base for his operation, in part as a punishment for failing him. Narcissa was forced to witness the humiliation and degradation of her husband and her son, for their shortfalls and lack of success in their tasks set forth by Voldemort. While she never openly blamed Lucius for their dilemma, it served as a large strain to their relationship. Tensions were high, especially after the incident when Harry Potter was brought to their house and then escaped. Lucius and Bella had argued bitterly about who would summon Voldemort, and when he arrived to discover their failure again, all the Malfoys, including Narcissa, suffered the Crucio curse.

This was a first time she was punished by Voldemort; for Narcissa, it turned her wavering heart against Voldemort and his goals. She internally vowed to do what she could to secret her family away, at any cost. She became fierce in her conviction; she used this drive to lie to Voldemort the last day of the battle when she reported that Harry Potter was dead. When Voldemort called the occupants of the school out, and Neville Longbottom instigated the fight by slaying his horrible snake, Narcissa acted. Barely noticed by others, she moved into the school, hexing her own Death Eater associates and the like to find her son. Once they were re-united, the three aparated home to the Malfoy Manor, and days later, the inquest began.

10. What has your character been doing in the two years since the end of Deathly Hallows?
Narcissa had been acting as the head of the household, as Lucius has been forced to remain on house arrest. The first year, she and her family were rarely seen in public, but used their time to repair the Manor, and re-cooperate from the time of Voldemort's reign over their life. It became clear as they healed that both Lucius and Narcissa wanted to return to their former glory i possible, as a respectable Pure-blood family. Under Lucius's direction, Narcissa began a quiet campaign with the Ministry to reduce Lucius's house arrest sentence. Narcissa is close to achieving this success after countless meetings, lunches, petitions, and campaign contributions. Narcissa also made the decision to begin visiting St. Mungos, at first on a monthly basis. It has now escalated, and Narcissa finds herself in the halls, interacting with the healers on a weekly basis. Being an excellent Potions student and having earned high marks on her NEWTs, she has an interest in the potions creation/production department of the hospital.

In the last year, now that she is out in public more often, Narcissa has decided to start the next step to improving the Malfoy reputation; she will have the Malfoys sponsor various events, for fundraising purposes.

11. Important relationships (friends, lovers, enemies): Narcissa is married to Lucius Malfoy. She is close to her son, Draco Malfoy. She has not been in contact with Rodolphus Lestrange, but being her brother-in-law, she is close to him, especially since the loss of her sister. She is also close to Rabastan, having had a brief affair with him in her youth. She has not taken a lover for many, many years. Narcissa is friendly with many of Draco's friends from school, especially Pansy Parkinson. She has no specific enemies who are still alive, but has a general dislike for Gryffindors in general.

12. How does your character view the events of Deathly Hallows?
As stated in her history, those events changed her. She was not allowed to continue as a quiet, reserve lady; she was forced to get involved, more actively, though absolutely reluctantly. In the past, the Death Eater taint did not permeate her home. She knew of them, knew who they were and interacted with them socially on occasion. With Voldemort in her home, under her nose, ordering her and her family about, she realized how foolish it was to be associated with him. She would not blame Lucius openly, but knew that she had to be strong and cunning to get her family out of their predicament. Normally seen as quiet and demure, cold and indifferent, Narcissa has been spurred to rely on her inner strength and her fiery passion for her family to mask her furry and hatred for Voldemort and find some way out. She was shocked when Harry Potter walked into the camp, and her stomach dropped as she watched him fall. His death meant the end of any hope Narcissa had for escaping Voldemort's clutches. When the Dark Lord called for someone to check Potter's body, Narcissa roused herself from her bleak vision of her future. When she realized Harry was alive, she immediately found hope. Knowing that Draco was alive doubled her resolve to strive to save her family. She acted without reservation and lied to Voldemort. She found her son and her husband, and as stated in her history, she fled with her family to heal their wounds.

13. What are some of your ideas/plans for the character?
Narcissa is going to be out and about in public. She is going to begin to re-encourage Draco's old friends to visit. She is going to organize some major events. She is going to get Lucius off house arrest. She is going to perhaps have a fling or two. She would like to see Pure-bloods re-organize.

14. Please give us an in-character, third person writing sample (minimum 200 words). Include dialogue.
Note to self,

Today's meeting was excellent. As I sat across from the insufferable prat, I found myself well practiced at my smile of encouragement and my expression of open interest. It is so odd to practice these masks; they are such contrary to my previous life. I remember a time when I spent hours, watching myself in the mirror, erasing every expression from my face so as to present the perfect reflection of poise and indifference. Here I am now, smiling and giving the illusion of open acceptance and friendship. It was laughable. It was pathetic. If Lucius only knew what I put myself through for his sake. I can hear his arguments in my head, even now as I make my way home. He would say, "Narcissa, you did well. It was effective, was it not?"

I would reply, "But Lucius, he was a slimy Muggle loving fool. He had the gaul to think me his friend. He put his hand on mine, on the table. It was truly unbearable."

"He what? Touched you? I'll kill him!"

He would growl at this point, and begin stalking around the room. Then he would begin the rant about getting out of the Manor and feeling like a trapped animal. I would spend the next minutes soothing him and calming his nerves, my poor dear. I won't mention it to him. Suffice he knows that the meeting went well. He has begun to stop asking me for too many details. It only serves to irritate him to distraction that I am the one who must solve these issues.

I find myself not sharing every detail with him, on more than one occasion. I see myself creating this separate life, away from the Manor, away from him. It is an odd thing to see occurring in my life, but it is a necessary evil. If I cannot act on my own, I cannot move things forward for our family. Lucius can only do so much from home, through owls and letters and people coming to the house. The rest falls to me. Draco is much occupied with his own life and his own needs. I won't ask him to do more than find his own path. So, it is all rests on me. But, surprisingly, I am enjoying it; in fact, I am flourishing. I am a Black; there is nothing I cannot tackle that I will not succeed upon.

But as I walk away from the restaurant, with the letter of recommendation in my hand, I find myself searching for my true heart. This fraudeulent mask of humor and kindness slips and is replaced by my cool, secure indifference. Now, I am ready to make my way home, with relief.
